Where it comes from.
Dr. Terry Johnsson grew up in the Pacific Northwest. But every summer, he went back to Louisiana.
Back to the family farm. Back to the peppers his family had been growing for nearly 100 years. Back to the kitchen where his mother cooked - gumbo on the stove, the smell reaching you before you'd even opened the door - and handed plates to everyone who walked in. The kind of cooking that made you feel safe. Seen. Like it was made specifically for you.

Maybe it's Louisiana. Maybe it's somewhere else entirely. But there's a flavor in your memory that nothing on the grocery store shelf has ever quite gotten right.
A few years ago, Terry visited his Aunt Eddie in a nursing home. She said she wanted watermelon - the syrupy sweet kind her family grew back in Arkansas. The nursing home said they'd make sure she got it.
Months later, he asked if she was still getting it. She looked around to make sure no one was watching.
"Yeah. But i throw it away. They put vinegar and salt on it."
She didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. So, she stayed quiet, and kept throwing it away.
That's when Terry realized: seniors all over this country are losing the food they grew up on because nobody thought to ask.
